This is one of those guitars that looks like it’s already had a few stories to tell. The Martin 000-15M StreetMaster takes the classic 000-15M recipe and gives it a seriously cool, road-worn makeover. The distressed satin finish makes it look like an old favourite that’s spent years being used, but underneath that vintage vibe you’ve got a properly modern, American-made Martin. This particular example is pretty much as it left the factory and is in exceptional condition. We can’t find anything untoward to report, although keep in mind it is a distressed factory finish.

The construction is wonderfully simple: solid mahogany top, back and sides. Nothing unnecessary, just a great big slab of mahogany doing what mahogany does best. The result is a warm, woody and beautifully balanced sound with plenty of midrange punch and a lovely feel that makes these guitars particularly addictive to play.

The 000 body shape is a big part of the appeal. It’s smaller and more comfortable than a Dreadnought but still has plenty of volume, with a responsive feel that works brilliantly for fingerpicking, blues, folk and the singer-songwriter. It’s also a fantastic sofa guitar, the sort of instrument you pick up for five minutes and realise you’ve been playing for an hour.

The neck is a Modified Low Oval with Standard Taper, giving the guitar a familiar Martin feel without being remotely cumbersome. The 25.4″ scale and 1 11/16″ nut width keep things traditional, while the 16″ fingerboard radius gives you a nice, comfortable playing surface. An East Indian Rosewood fingerboard and bridge, with Martin’s distinctive abalone Diamonds and Squares inlay add to the subtle looks. Add in the open gear tuners, ebony bridge pins and Mahogany Burst top, and the whole thing has a suitably aged, understated look.

There’s no onboard electronics here and that’s exactly the point. This is a proper all-acoustic Martin, built around the sound of the wood rather than a pickup system.

And that StreetMaster finish? It’s brilliant. The distressed satin isn’t pretending to be a pristine new guitar; it’s supposed to look played-in from day one. It feels comfortable in the hand, looks effortlessly cool and gives an otherwise traditional Martin 000 a lot more feel.

A cracking all-solid mahogany Martin for anyone who likes their acoustics simple.
