The Gibson ES-335 is a key part of Gibson’s catalogue. The Memphis 2015 ES-335 is a 60s-inspired instrument and they really pulled out all the stops for these! A long neck tenon, “Small Window” block inlays, narrow horns (like the 63 reissue’s), Grover rotomatics and Burstbucker 1 & 2 pickups really make these exceptional players guitars.

This particular guitar has been used with some minor playwear as you would expect, it has some very minor surface impressions that are difficult to see unless in direct light. The frets are perfect with plenty of life left and it plays exceptionally well across the board. Some natural ageing of the nickel hardwear as well as some minor corrosion to the Grover tuners.

Body Construction:

The 2015 Memphis ES-335 has a semi-hollow body delivering a bright and open acoustic-esque sound with plenty of volume. Despite being a semi-hollow design, the body is quite thin compared to some other Gibson models, offering a comfortable playing experience. Maple and Poplar tonewoods are used for the top, back and sides along with a Maple centreblock within the body, providing brilliant definition.

The neck has a familiar slim taper C neck profile with the more desirable long neck tenon. It feels substantial in the hands without being too chunky. Rolled binding also offers a smoother feel and a sleek transition between the side of the neck and the fretboard, a great feature that you will find only on high-calibre instruments like this.

The quarter-sawn Mahogany neck is adorned with a tight grain dark Rosewood fingerboard, giving you a silky smooth feel around the neck. This combination of woods brings out the warmth of this guitar, merging well with the brighter body woods.

Hardware and Electronics:

The 2015 ES-335 has a modern ABR-1 locking bridge, with a locking die-cast zinc tailpiece that makes string changes effortless. Grover Rotomatic tuners offer improved tuning stability.

Dual Burstbucker 1 & 2 humbucking pickups deliver plenty of output, with a strong and punchy mid-range as well as a tight bass response. With distortion they can sound fairly raunchy and bold, meaning the ES-335 is not just a one-trick pony. You can use this for jazz, blues, rock, indie or even metal – it’s that versatile!
