Gibson Les Paul Custom 1971 Ebony. Good Original Condition 7.5/10.
For further information or additional photos (pots, pickup detail etc) see our website.
One of the coolest guitars we’ve had in. This early one owner 1971 Les Paul Custom has the more desirable pre-74 specs and being one of the earliest models it has the early pancake body, the more desirable one piece neck, smaller volute and smaller heel profile. The colour is also somehow “darker” than later guitars, sounds silly but it really is. It is in good condition for a well used 52 year old guitar with normal wear, patina, blemishes, tarnishing to the hardware you’d expect from life on the road. The binding is yellowing nicely as you’d expect given its age.
The guitar blacklights perfectly with no modifications, breaks, overspray or repairs. It has some buckle rash on the reverse which is visible and plenty of dings from life on the road in the early 70s as well as a larger ding to the neck. All this is purely cosmetic and it plays beautifully with no issues. The frets are in fantastic shape with the guitar being re-fretted by Gibson UK back in the 80’s with the nibs mostly intact. According to the original owner the guitar was used in a touring band for around 15 years and retired to live in its case post re-fret and unearthed again a few years ago when we were lucky enough to buy it. Please inspect the photos carefully as they are a really good reflection of the condition.
The guitar is all original aside from a new bone nut, replacement saddles, a black aged switch tip and later mid 70s Gibson case. The original switch tip and photo with the original owner is in the case. The original tailpiece, bridge, pickups and waffleback tuners are missing some of the gold due to many years of life on the road. The guitar stays in tune and intonates well and really does sound fantastic plugged in. The original “T Top” Patent Number pickups and pots are present dating to the 5th Week of 1971 with original Sprague black beauty capacitors. The pots remain smooth and do not “crackle” or need replacing. The witch hat knobs are also original equipment.
This one really does have it all and we’ll be sad to see it go. Beautiful patina from years of playing, unmodified and no breaks or repairs. All the character you’d want from a vintage Les Paul.
The spec includes classic mahogany/maple/mahogany pancake body with maple cap, a comfortable medium profile one piece neck and dark ebony board with gold hardware including the waffle back tuners. The original Gibson patent number “T Top” PAFs sound fantastic as you’d expect.
Guitar will be well packed and sent fully insured. Thanks for viewing!
