The 2017 Firebird Studio took the unmistakable Firebird shape and stripped things back to make a seriously usable rock machine. You get the classic non-reverse Firebird body, a set mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard and a pair of Gibson’s seriously punchy 496R and 496T humbuckers. Condition wise the guitar has been played but exceptionally well looked after. As such it is in excellent shape with no significant marks, scratches, dents or damage to report aside from a very minor impression at the back of the upper headstock.

Unlike the traditional Firebird, which is known for its mini-humbuckers and neck-through construction, the Studio version goes for a more conventional set-neck design and full-size humbuckers. Gibson specifically designed the 496R/496T combination for more aggressive rock tones than the traditional Firebird mini-humbuckers. The result is a Firebird with considerably more grunt. Great tones all the way from smooth blues to powerful hard rock.

The SlimTaper mahogany neck is fast and comfortable too, while the 24.75″ scale keeps things familiar if you’re used to a Les Paul or SG. The rosewood fingerboard has a 12″ radius and 22 frets, making this an easy guitar to get around on.

The hardware is nicely straightforward, too. You’ve got Mini-Grover tuners, a Tektoid nut and an aluminium Tune-o-Matic bridge and Stop Bar. It’s a lighter and more compact take on the Firebird idea, at 7.5lb it avoids the heavyweight reputation some Gibson studio models have.

The combination of the non-reverse Firebird silhouette, simple dot inlays and chrome hardware gives it a slightly more understated look than the full-fat Firebird models, although there’s nothing understated about the sound. A really cool Gibson for anyone after something a little different. All the attitude of a Firebird, but with the familiar feel and muscle of a pair of hot Gibson humbuckers.
