Weight: 6.2lbs.
Purchased directly from the original owners family this ES-330 is an absolute belter of a guitar. It rings like a bell and sounds absolutely fantastic plugged in. A really slinky player too! The guitar is completely original throughout aside what looks to be a replacement strap button at the heel.
Being a ’64 its the most sought after year. Gibson based the limited run of the ’64 ES-330 Historic Memphis Reissues on these guitars. The body features the wider nut, nickel hardware, narrower horn contours and a beautiful sunburst finish. This one is in truly incredible condition having been played and toured for a few years back in the 1960s and put away in the 70’s in favour of other guitars. For a vintage guitar there is nothing major to speak of. There are a few very minor dings here and there as you would expect. The finish is in exceptional shape for a vintage guitar. In our view this is a “collector grade” instrument with fantastic provenance and history. See pictures.
There are no breaks, modifications or repairs to the guitar. The original pickups, pots and black beauty capacitors are working well. The guitar retains its original frets and has recently been dressed for the new owner, with plenty of life left. The guitar sounds and play fantastically across the board as you would expect.
All hardware & electronics are in excellent working order with the nickel hardware still in great shape. The guitar even retains its original tuners and bushings. The binding on the body has yellowed but is all intact, again with no repairs.
1964 ES-330 – Edgar Rees
Edgar was born in Merthyr Tydfil in 1918 to a family of French descent.
One of eight Welsh-speaking siblings, Edgar grew up in a deeply musical household—his sister Margaret was a concert pianist, and family gatherings were filled with instruments and song. Edgar was a talented guitarist influenced by Django Reinhardt, performing throughout the UK and beyond in the 1960s with the Scanella 7. He played alongside many artists including Tom Jones, playing everywhere from social clubs to Sunday strip shows.
He bought his beloved guitar from Gamlyn’s in Cardiff in 1966, and it was played only by him. Later in life, Edgar married Glenys and had one son, James (b. 1961), who followed in his footsteps as a guitarist and songwriter.
His music and legacy live on through his family and this very ES-330 serial #159551.
