Gibson Custom Shop Historic Collection ’58 1958 Les Paul Standard “Custom Authentic” Flame Top Reissue 2001 Butterscotch. Excellent condition 9.75/10.
Weight: 9.5lbs.
The “Custom Authentic” line is a limited highly sought after run amongst Les Paul fanatics. These guitars are the first in the Gibson line ever to feature the VOS (light aged) finish. The guitars featured the best woods available, exceptional craftsmanship and finishing detail. These guitars are also the first to feature the very first Burstbucker 2 & 3 PAF humbucking pickups from Gibson Custom as well as Grover Rotomatic tuners as standard, not available on the “Standard” 1958 historic reissue model from the same year.
The guitar looks, sounds and plays exceptionally well as you’d expect from the very best of the Gibson Custom Shop Historic collection. The early 2000’s are re-known as a fantastic era for Gibson with exceptional quality tonewoods used. The guitar is really resonant and without doubt the nicest R8 we’ve had, not to mention the incredible flame top!
The guitar weighs in at 9.5lb with its buttescotch/lemon drop sunburst heavily flamed top looking very true to an old 59 exposed to some sunshine, rather than a 58. The two piece flame maple cap has some beautiful looks and changes throughout the light, very 3D and very desirable. This is the highest specification maple cap you could order at the time too. Condition wise the guitar is excellent and completely unmodified. The frets and electronics are perfect, the guitar has been exceptionally well looked after and hardly played in its 20years in existence. We cannot see anything significant to report and the guitar has been exceptionally well cared for with no modifications. When it came in we replaced the original bridge with a hand-aged genuine Gibson ABR-1 replacement as the original had sunk a little (a very common issue, often overlooked ). The original is included in the case.
The quartersawn one-piece mahogany neck has the slightly chunkier 58 Historic C shaped profile – comfortable, and very manageable but not massive as some of these can be. We’d class this as a chunkier ’59 profile as opposed a true ’58 chunky neck. The rosewood fretboard has a beautiful tight and dark grain. The guitar is starting to age beautifully with the usual binding bleed and pearloid trapezoid inlays with rounded corners (only available in 2001-2002) really do look superb – A very desirable instrument.
The Burstbucker 2 & 3 humbuckers have the harmonic complexity and tonal range that you expect from a guitar produced in Gibson’s golden age. The bridge pickup has cut and snarl while still cleaning up nicely and delivering a smooth and balanced midrange, while the neck pickup has more warmth, pairing well with the bridge when both pickups are engaged. The electronics work perfectly and the guitar sounds absolutely superb.
Original hardshell case, Gibson Custom Shop certificate of authenticity and all historic case candy included.
