Gibson Custom Shop ’59 Les Paul Standard R9 1959 Historic Reissue 2011 Cherry Sunburst VOS – Very Good Condition 8.5/10
This particular R9 has been well cared for but has been played over the last 12 years or so as you would expect. The jack plate has been replaced with a genuine Gibson metal version. Other than the fact the guitar is “used” the guitars condition is very good 8.5/10 with a few small imperfections and small impressions on the rear of the guitar and headstock. None of these affect playability and are incredibly minor. There is no damage to the top of the guitar. Please inspect the photos carefully.
In 2011 Gibson had a good year with the exact duplication of the neck profile and top carve from an original ’59 Burst. The finish is very thin and looks as good as we have ever seen from Gibson. All 2011 guitars feature hot hide glue construction, a historically accurate ’59 hand finished top and neck neck carve and are fitted with historic parts, with period correct hardware, electronics and custom wound BurstBucker PAF pickups.
This one weighs in at 8.8lb and has a really nice top and very in-keeping with the period of the more flamed tops like the Kossoff burst/Jimmy Page original bursts. Its a nice wide, ribbon flame with some tapering towards the centre seam. It is very 3D with tons of movement (also making it very difficult to photograph!) All woods are hand selected and graded with tight grain and beautiful marbling as you’d expect on the very best in the Gibson line.
It has a great vintage look and looks highly accurate with the VOS finish. The parts are nicely ageing, with the nickel tarnishing with light corrosion on the Aluminium (nickel plated) lightweight tailpiece. Moving away from the gorgeous maple top and Historic part detail. The tone is pure magic. This one can do it all at 8.8lb and is a good weight and nicely balanced for a Les Paul. It is particularly rich and full sounding while still retaining its clarity and is in fantastic condition.
Gibson Specs:
The Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Standard VOS Series is a painstaking re-creation of the original 1959 Les Paul. The only major change to the Standard in 1959 was the addition of wider, fatter jumbo frets which facilitated more dramatic bends. The real force of this change was not felt until the late 1960s when rock and blues players like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, and Peter Green began to discover the fat, warm voice of the ’59 Standard. This moment in history marked the beginning of the idealization of the 1959 Les Paul Standard as the quintessential guitar in the minds of guitarists and collectors everywhere.
Using a combination of traditional hand craftsmanship and modern technology, the luthiers of the Custom Shop painstakingly reproduce the key elements that define cool, vintage instrument-stunning looks, flawless playability, and unsurpassed tone.
The Vintage Original Spec series has a proprietary finishing process that yields the gently aged patina of a vintage classic. Also, a revolutionary handcrafting process enhances the comfort and playability of these guitars. Solid mahogany back, historically accurate long neck tenon for superior strength and sustain, period correct neck profiles, hardware and electronics, and 100% nitrocellulose lacquer are among some of the features offered in the Gibson Custom VOS series.
