Gibson Custom Shop ’59 Les Paul Standard R9 1959 Historic Reissue 2014 Washed Cherry Gloss VOS – Excellent Condition 9.5/10

This particular R9 has been an under the bed “case queen” and seldom been played over the last 7 years or so as far as we can see. It has just a few tiny tiny marks by the jack socket to speak of shown in the photos where it looks to have caught a stand – they are only visible in direct light and do not penetrate the Nitro at all. Other than that the guitars condition is fantastic.

In 2014 Gibson had a good year with the exact duplication of the neck profile and top carve from an original ’59 Burst. The finish is very thin and looks as good as we have ever seen from Gibson. All 2014 guitars feature hot hide glue construction, a historically accurate ’59 hand finished top and neck neck carve and are fitted with historic parts, with period correct hardware, electronics and custom wound PAF Custombucker pickups. The truss rod sleeve tubing from previous years was removed to make these more historically accurate along with revised plastic formulations and the addition of the period correct lightweight aluminium tailpiece.

This one has an unbelievable top and very in-keeping with the period of the more flamed tops like the Kossoff burst. Its a nice wide, ribbon flame with some absolutely gorgeous marbling to it on the left side. Looks much more like the original guitars rather than the massively wide crazy flame tops you sometimes see on these, very traditional and in-keeping whilst exceptionally beautiful. It is very 3D with tons of movement (also making it very difficult to photograph!) All woods are hand selected and graded with tight grain and marbling as you’d expect on the very best in the Gibson line. The colour is a great looking washed cherry burst. The previous owner wanted an R9 that looked as accurate as possible to an original would look if it was stored away for all these years.

It has a great vintage look and looks highly accurate with the VOS finish on the Nickel hardware, gorgeous maple top and Historic parts. The tone is pure magic. This one can do it all at 9.7lb. It is particularly rich and full sounding while still retaining its clarity and is in fantastic condition.

Gibson Specs:
The Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Standard VOS Series is a painstaking re-creation of the original 1959 Les Paul. The only major change to the Standard in 1959 was the addition of wider, fatter jumbo frets which facilitated more dramatic bends. The real force of this change was not felt until the late 1960s when rock and blues players like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, and Peter Green began to discover the fat, warm voice of the ’59 Standard. This moment in history marked the beginning of the idealization of the 1959 Les Paul Standard as the quintessential guitar in the minds of guitarists and collectors everywhere.

Using a combination of traditional hand craftsmanship and modern technology, the luthiers of the Custom Shop painstakingly reproduce the key elements that define cool, vintage instrument-stunning looks, flawless playability, and unsurpassed tone.

The Vintage Original Spec series has a proprietary finishing process that yields the gently aged patina of a vintage classic. Also, a revolutionary handcrafting process enhances the comfort and playability of these guitars. Solid mahogany back, historically accurate long neck tenon for superior strength and sustain, period correct neck profiles, hardware and electronics, and 100% nitrocellulose lacquer are among some of the features offered in the Gibson Custom VOS. series. The guitar also benefits from Gibson Custom’s 20th Anniversary Specifications, newly adopted for 2013-14. These include a one-piece rosewood fingerboard, Kluson™ Deluxe machine heads, hot-hide glue neck fit, a Historic Truss Rod assembly with no tubing, accurate body and fingerboard binding color, new Custom Buckers created in the image of the original PAFs, and period-correct Aniline dye offered in VOS and Gloss.
