Gibson Custom Shop 50th Anniversary (Gold Book, 341/500) ’59 Les Paul Standard R9 1959 Historic Reissue 2009 Cherry Burst VOS – Mint Condition 9.9/10.

This particular R9 has been a case queen and is as it left the factory. The guitar sat under a bed since late 2009. You’d be hard pressed to tell it’s ever been used, with no significant dings, scratches, dents or damage. Other than the fact the guitar is “used” the guitars condition is exceptional. These guitars remain a great investment, the 40th Anniversary models are now commanding high prices with these 50th anniversary models highly likely to follow.

For the 40th Anniversary run in 2009 Gibson had a good year with the exact duplication of the neck profile and top carve from an original ’59 Burst. The finish is very thin and looks as good as we have ever seen from Gibson. All 2009 guitars feature hot hide glue construction, a historically accurate ’59 hand finished top and neck neck carve and are fitted with historic parts, with period correct hardware, electronics and custom wound BurstBucker PAF pickups. There were only 500 true 40th Anniversary models made, 250 in “Heritage Cherry Sunburst” and another 250 in “Heritage Dark Burst” these are signified by a “Gold Book” COA included with the guitar as seen in the pictures.

This one has an unbelievable top, possibly the nicest we’ve seen and very in-keeping with the period of the more highly wider flamed tops like the Chickenshack burst/Kossoff burst/Jimmy Page original bursts. Its a nice wide, ribbon flame with some absolutely gorgeous marbling to it. Very traditional and in-keeping whilst exceptionally beautiful. It is very 3D with tons of movement (also making it very difficult to photograph!) All woods are hand selected and graded with tight grain and marbling as you’d expect on the very best in the Gibson line. The previous owner wanted an R9 that looked as accurate as possible to an original would look without the wear. There’s next to none of the “binding bleed” usually seen on these either which means Gibson gave the guitar enough time to dry between lacquer coats.

It has a great vintage look and looks highly accurate with its gloss finish, gorgeous maple top and Historic parts. The tone is pure magic. This one can do it all at 8.6lb. It is particularly rich and full sounding while still retaining its clarity and is in fantastic condition.

Gibson Specs:

The Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Standard Series is a painstaking re-creation of the original 1959 Les Paul. The only major change to the Standard in 1959 was the addition of wider, fatter jumbo frets which facilitated more dramatic bends. The real force of this change was not felt until the late 1960s when rock and blues players like Eric Clapton, Mike Bloomfield, and Peter Green began to discover the fat, warm voice of the ’59 Standard. This moment in history marked the beginning of the idealization of the 1959 Les Paul Standard as the quintessential guitar in the minds of guitarists and collectors everywhere.

Using a combination of traditional hand craftsmanship and modern technology, the luthiers of the Custom Shop painstakingly reproduce the key elements that define cool, vintage instrument-stunning looks, flawless playability, and unsurpassed tone.
