Sometimes a guitar just sounds and feels “right”. This is another one of those guitars. All 2017 guitars from the Gibson Custom Shop we’ve encountered so far tend to be exceptional, a good year for Gibson. The guitar rings like a bell, sounds epic and is a super slinky player. The guitar has much more of a classic 58 feeling neck too. Not a big chunky number but not the skinnier 1959 profile either.

One of the nicest sounding and playing 1958 Les Paul Historic Reissues we’ve had in recent times. A beautifully authentic plain maple top with plenty of nice natural grain and subtle mineral deposits. A limited run Abilene Sunset Burst evokes a much more vintage aesthetic with this one. The gloss nitrocellulose finish really sets it off with some stunning looks to the wood and finish in different lights as well as some very subtle flame. The back isn’t much different either!

Weighing in at 8.9lbs and being nicely balanced this is a great weight for an R8. Condition wise we’d describe this as being excellent/near mint. The guitar has been played but extremely well cared for and looked after. It has just the few very minor impressions photographed. They are difficult to photograph and very hard to see unless you directly light them. Otherwise the guitar looks pretty exceptional to us. The guitar as mentioned has been played with some very minor fading on the back of the neck, which is normal on these models. There are no significant dents or damage to the guitar other than the blemishes photographed. The frets are in excellent condition too!

In terms of the ever improving 58 and 59 reissues, 2017 was a fantastic year. This particular model features historically accurate body contours from a 1958 guitar. Rosewood fretboards were re-introduced with the introduction of all plastics being “Historic”, featuring accurate profiles, colouration and material composition from original parts using chemical analysis and 3D scanning. The finish is very thin and looks as good as we have ever seen from Gibson. All 2017 guitars feature hot hide glue construction, a historically accurate ’58 wet sanded hand finished top and neck neck carve and are fitted with historic parts, with period correct hardware, electronics and hand wound custombucker PAF pickups.

This guitar has a great vintage look and exceptional tone with the semi-dulled nickel hardware finish, gorgeous naturally checked plain maple top and Historic parts. The tone is pure magic and this one can do it all at 8.4lb. It is a particularly rich and full sounding guitar while still retaining its clarity. A guitar you’ll just want to keep picking up!
