These don’t come up for sale often. This is a 2011, Gibson 50th Anniversary Pete Townshend SG Special in Alpine White to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Gibson SG and Pete’s later use of Polaris White Gibson SG Specials.

To celebrate the Golden Anniversary of the instrument behind the Live at Leeds-era Who performances and recordings, Gibson USA released the 50th Anniversary Pete Townshend SG. These guitars have all the period-correct details of an early ’60s SG Special customised by Pete, with Townshend’s preferred hardware and custom specification P90 pickups.

This model represents the early ’60s SG Special with a smaller pre-’65 pickguard (5-ply B/W/B/W/B) that Townshend used for the first British Quadrophenia shows in late 1972 and early ’73, before he switched to a Gibson Les Paul Deluxe for the remainder of the ’70s

The guitar is in excellent condition throughout and looks to have lived most of its life in its case. The only issues to report are a small line of “normal” checking near the control knobs and an area of discolouration at the back of the neck, likely some colour transfer/bleed from the case and a small blemish to the headstock fascia. The frets are in excellent shape and the only blemishes are a couple of small areas of discolouration (see images).

The guitar features the iconic SG solid Mahogany body and neck with nitrocellulose finish capturing Pete’s favoured custom colour – Alpine White. The guitar has a unique 50th Anniversary headstock banner, a mahogany rounded C profile neck with tight grain rosewood fingerboard, 22 medium-jumbo frets and a compensated wraparound bridge and Grover tuners.

The P-90 single-coil pickups control the tones and are built to Pete’s specifications. These pickups were recreated in accurate detail with genuine Alnico V magnets and 42-AWG wire, they produce the punchy midrange, thumping lows and sweetly musical highs Pete and the Who are known for. It’s a huge-sounding, resonant guitar, perfect for anything from crunchy power-chord rhythm to gritty, singing lead tones.

It comes complete with its original ‘The Who’ stencil signature case to keep the guitar protected. A must for any Who fan!
