Here we have a Fender Kurt Cobain Road Worn Jaguar from 2011, the very first year of production. A seriously cool and increasingly collectible Fender signature model, faithfully based on Kurt Cobain’s heavily modified 1965 Jaguar used during Nirvana’s early-’90s period.
Introduced by Fender in 2011 to mark the 20th anniversary of Nevermind, the Kurt Cobain Jaguar was produced in both left- and right-handed versions, with the left-handed model being particularly desirable. Fender went to considerable lengths to reproduce the character of Cobain’s original guitar, including the aged finish and hardware, bound rosewood fingerboard, Stratocaster-style headstock and unusual control layout.
The Road Worn relic finish gives the guitar an instantly familiar appearance, recreating the battered look of Cobain’s original Jaguar rather than presenting it as a conventional pristine Fender. Combined with the black chrome hardware aged nickel hardware and tortoiseshell pickguard, it has a huge amount of character. Condition wise the guitar is excellent throughout, it has been well looked after throughout and everything works as it should. The original Kurt Cobain booklet included from the factory with these guitars is missing, but can still be sourced online as required.
Underneath the vintage-inspired exterior is a much more aggressive specification. The guitar is fitted with a DiMarzio DP103 PAF 36th Anniversary humbucker in the neck and a DiMarzio DP100 Super Distortion in the bridge, giving the Jaguar considerably more output and power than the traditional single-coil specification. The three-way toggle switch provides bridge, bridge and neck, or neck pickup selection.
The control layout is another of the defining features. Rather than the conventional Jaguar arrangement, the Cobain model has three knurled aged nickel knobs configured as volume, volume and tone, closely following the unusual electronics fitted to Cobain’s own instrument. The traditional Jaguar lead/rhythm circuit is also retained.
The 24″ scale length and Modern C maple neck make this a particularly comfortable Jaguar to play, while the bound rosewood fingerboard and 22 medium-jumbo frets give it a familiar feel for both Fender and offset-guitar players.
The black chrome Adjusto-Matic bridge is paired with a vintage-style floating tremolo tailpiece and tremolo lock, while Gotoh sealed tuners provide reliable tuning stability. The combination of the offset Jaguar body, short scale, powerful humbuckers and modified controls makes this a very different animal from a traditional Jaguar.
Being a 2011 first-year example, this guitar comes from the original launch period of one of Fender’s most distinctive artist models. It is an especially interesting piece for collectors of Fender artist guitars and Nirvana memorabilia.
A superb-looking and highly characterful Fender with a specification that works equally well for playing or collecting. The Kurt Cobain Jaguar remains one of Fender’s most recognisable artist models and the first-year examples have a particular appeal.
