In 1994, the Fender Custom Shop was still in its formative, highly influential years, with John Page serving as one of its founding Master Builders and leaders. This era emphasized hand-built instruments, close attention to detail, and a return to vintage accuracy after Fender’s unstable CBS years. Guitars from this period were typically made in very small numbers, often by a single builder or smaller team and focused on classic Stratocaster and Telecaster designs with premium woods, thin finishes, and meticulous craftsmanship. Instruments from the John Page era are now highly regarded for their build quality, tone, and historical importance, marking the Custom Shop’s transition from an experiment into a world-class boutique operation.
This 1994 1960 NOS Stratocaster Reissue is no exception to the impressive and highly collectible early 90’s Custom Shop era featuring some of the best tone-woods available. This Strat features an incredibly 3Dimensional 2 piece book-matched quilt maple cap on 2 piece select ash body with beautiful figuring throughout making for a very unique looking and sounding Strat in the most sought after 1960 specification.
The guitar features a quilt maple neck with a beautifully tight grain slab rosewood fretboard and super comfortable 1960 Oval C profile which is a real joy to play. It has a bright, warm and snappy sound to it just as you’d want a strat – with its Ash/Maple combination alongside hand-wound 1960 period correct pickups.
Just in case you didn’t think the master luthiers of the Custom Shop hadn’t already pulled out all the stops, this one has period correct gold hardware throughout and a white pearloid 1960 3 ply scratchplate with gold screws. Condition wise the guitar really hasn’t seen much use with a couple of very minor points to note. The frets are in excellent shape alongside the rest of the guitar with just a couple of very minor impressions, one to the top edge (see images) and two to the back of the guitar (see images). All are very minor and to be expected on a 31 year old used guitar. The backplate has recently been replaced with an aftermarket version in correct materials since the original was left off the guitar in the case and has sadly warped. No additional holes have been drilled and the original backplate is included.
